CLASSIC (NEWBIE) MISTAKES

People dont really visit my site, therefor I keep making new ones.. bad idea! Getting visitors, not to mention, making the return, takes time and devotion. If you just keep making a new site every 2nd week or so, people won't be able to find you again, if they actually liked your site (which is very unlikely if you haven't spend more than a few weeks on it). Need more visitors? Then go here instead.

People dont really visit my site, therefore I'm now closing.. Now what good does that do you? If you feel like making a website, then you do that. Keep in mind that visitors don't just magicly follow, when you create a website. You're site takes a lot of time, devotion and hard work, and so does attracting visitors! Websites is, and has allways been, a lot of work. The webmasters with the really big and impressive websites, who attract lots of visitors, has spent disturbingly maney hours/day/months/years/you-name-it on their site. And if you haven't noticed, then let me tell you, that, not only, are those kind of website ussually over a year, if not serval years old, and it's hardly ever the webmasters first website. Insted of just complaing, complaing and complaing, and giving up, these webmasters has been practicing, practicing and practicing!

Most newbies have the bad habit of directlinking.. why? Ussually because they have no idea what it is. Been there my self too! So now I'll just give a fast desciption of what it is, and the problem with people doing it.

• What you're doing wrong?
You right-click on an image, and choose "Copy".

• How you do it the right way then?
Rightclick on the image and choose "Save as", and after that you upload it to your own webite/domaine/space.

• What's the big difference?
Problem is that you steal bandwidth from the website with the original pictures, with can result in closure of the site you got the image from, because their host don't allow them that much bandwidth, or they might have to pay for the extra bandwidth that you use withou their permission.

• Doesn't affect me!
Actually it does, because when they choose to remove, or move, the picture, it'll become a red X on you site.. like this one:

Lots of people claim, and complain, that they're out of ideas. Funny fact about this is.. that about 99% of them doesn't have more than about 25 pages of content on their website. It's times like that, that I can't help but wonder, what the hell is wrong with theese people. There is plenty of things to do still. Toturials, graphic, free stuff from you, adds, contests, reads.. I could go on and on. Theblackpearl.dk has over 150 pages of content, and yet I'm not even anywhere near where I want to be. Not to mention all the subsites I've had runing over the years. You can never have too maney contests, reads can be written by you too, free stuff has allways been popular, and people can't get enough of tutorials. Not to forget the subsite possibilities: Exchanges, surveys, topsites, fanlistings, hatelistings, fansites! There is no limt of what can be done, if you put your back into it. And there is always space for inprovement.

Well first of all, before saying anything else, I just want to let you know that there is nothing wrong with paint. But if you don't feel like making your own layout, I strongly suggest that you visit this site, full of free layouts. And while using these free layouts from others, you practice, practice and practice you graphic skills!

Why are you rushing into it like that? And with that attitude? Ever considered that you might not be ready for PHP yet? Just becuase you know "some htlm", or got a stylesheet to work, doesn't mean that your ready for php yet. Just because you like what it does, doesn't mean you can handle it yet. You don't just get good at php like that. It takes a lot of practice, hard work and much insight in what you're doing, to design in php. Also it demands a pretty big html knowledge. Take it easy and study your html, then someday you'll be ready. If you can't even answer these easy questions, you surely aren't ready: Do you actually know what php is? Do you know what a database is, or how it works? Do you have the data you need to connect to that datebase? Do you even know if you even have one?

Well, you've finnally gotten your website online, and things are going quite well, but then you meet a urgent problem, that you have no idea how to solve. You therefor choose to ask the webmaster of the best website you know, even thought you don't know the webmaster. The webmaster doesn't have the time to help you, and that makes you angry.

• Now what's wrong with this picture?
Well first of all you do not only ask a stranger to help you, but choose one that is without a doubt busy, and without a doubt constantly asked to help stangers. Secoundly, this stanger can't or won't help you, and you blame them.

• Then how to do it right?
You see that's the thing. It's actually really easy: 1) you join a webmaster forum 2) you ask your question in the forum (in the right underforum of course). 3) All the members will then be able to see your question. These people, who are members because they have interest in helping people. Noone gets angry or feel used or rejected. Easy and much more effective!
